It's Pretty to be Green

Published Friday, July 24, 2009 7:00 am

Acorn Organic Salon in Dover is on a roll. The recent winner of the NH Business Resource Center and WGIR's Innovation Rocks! award is celebrating its one-year anniversary. It won the award for its green business practices including recycling hair clippings to make mats to clean up oil spills. Soon the salon will offer non-toxic nail services to clients.

Acorn has conducted months of research and contacted vendors to find safe and healthy alternatives to the traditional chemical-filled nail products, which are typically high in toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, acetone, toluene, and DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate). “These ingredients have already been banned for use in cosmetics in the European Union for their links to health hazards such as birth defects, strong allergic reactions and cancer. So, finding a line without these ingredients was necessary for Acorn to go forward with manicures and pedicures services and remain committed to our green principles,” says Allison Degan, one of the two owners of the salon.

The salon's nail services will be organic, paraben-free, and vegan, and the nail products used will be in keeping with strict safety and environmental standards. The salon will not offer artificial nails because the owners say there are no toxin-free artificial nails on the market.
