Business NH Magazine began profiling promising startups through its annual “Upstart Startups” feature four years ago, including six this year. Only time will tell whether they will grow into tomorrow’s rising stars. Here is a profile of one of this year's startups:
Most young couples with demanding careers and young children can barely muster the energy to get dinner on the table and the kids to bed, never mind launch a business.
“We have no hobbies or fun. We have date night in the basement,” jokes Sumner Vanderhoof, who co-founded Addapptation with his wife Carla in March. But, the couple, parents of two children ages 2 and 4, have made a big splash with their innovation.
The company’s product helps businesses and nonprofits that want to make changes to their enterprise software to create micro apps that can be integrated into any cloud technology.
“We build the change we want to see in software. We can plug-in and solve the problems from the outside-in instead of the inside-out,” says Sumner, the CEO of his own cloud consulting firm, and former vice president of operations at Direct Capital and former head of CIT’s Innovation Lab.
It’s been a big first year for the company. Addapptation, based in Exeter, was accepted into the 2017 cohort of the Accelerate NH program at Alpha Loft in Manchester. Addapptation then won the Manchester Young Professional Network’s 2017 Startup Challenge and received $55,000 in cash and in-kind services. It was also one of only three companies that won $100,000 from the Millworks Fund at the Alpha Loft Startup Shindig in May.
The company has hired two full-time developers, a CTO and a full-time designer and is developing a pool of contractors to help clients develop micro apps. What they are ultimately building is a micro app exchange, Sumner says.
The couple has invested a quarter-million of their own money into the business and plans on raising pre-seed funds to help grow the company in the next 18 months.
After beta testing, Addapptation went live in March and has since grown from 100 users to 1,000, Sumner says. “We want to build something great in New Hampshire,” says Carla, a former educator who now handles the company’s marketing, creative direction and branding.
Adds Sumner, “We want to participate in the eco-system of tech talent here.”
